Energy Efficiency
As seen in another article on Mitsidi's blog, EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) is a green building platform that includes a certification program and its own app. Considered an innovation by the IFC (International Finance Corporation), a member company of the World Bank, EDGE seeks to respond to the need for a measurable and reliable solution that enables green construction in the commercial sphere, aiming for a low-carbon path. In this way, certification offers several benefits, such as efficient resource savings, reduction in utility bills, improvement of the internal environment, strengthening of the sustainability seal and increase in the sale price of buildings, among others.
To this end, the app allows you to dynamically simulate efficiency measures, in which it is possible to view the percentage of energy, water and material savings of the project, in search of the three available certification levels. In addition, it is possible to obtain various information, such as, for example, the costs of making a building more sustainable, the final use of energy and water, the expected savings in these categories, the estimated reduction in carbon emissions and the expected payback time.
Therefore, to submit a project for EDGE certification, the process begins with the registration of the application project, in which, first of all, the user must choose the type of building that will be submitted for certification. For this reason, the application, recently updated (version 3.0.0), includes various types of buildings, from homes to industries, making the simulation even more personalized and accurate. After this choice, the user is asked to provide details of the project, related to its design, and indicate the efficiency measures and materials used, completing the requested information. To do this, the application presents five tabs for navigation:
In the Project, the objective is to identify the characteristics of the project and its operation, for the construction of the facilities and the baseline. Likewise, construction and location data are requested, such as number of floors above and below the ground floor, dimensions of each facade, areas, input loads per room/activity, presence of a swimming pool, window/floor ratio, presence of an HVAC system, fuel use and climate data.
In the Energy tab, the user is asked to indicate the energy efficiency measures present in the project, as well as the data required for each of them. Examples include the use of roofs with adequate sunlight reflection and the use of shading devices, as well as the efficiency of air conditioning equipment and the dimensioning of the lighting system. Some measures are mandatory and must be chosen regardless of the efficiency standards.
In the Water section, similar to the previous section, the user is asked to indicate the water efficiency measures present in the project, as well as the data required for each of them. Examples include efficient taps, gutters and toilet flushes, as well as efficient irrigation and the presence of a water reuse system. Some measures are mandatory and must be chosen regardless of the efficiency standards.
In Materials, the user is asked to indicate the materials present in the project, as well as the data required for each of them. As examples, the materials requested are the floor slab, the roof, the external walls, as well as the window frames and the insulating materials used. All options are required for pre-filling.
The Operations section requires submission of the project's monthly energy consumption for one year, as this is the data used for EDGE carbon-zero certification.
After submitting all sections, it is necessary to attach documents proving the implementation of each efficiency measure. It is then possible to submit for preliminary certification, in which the auditor will have access to the project's record of non-application. For EDGE certification, the process is similar, with changes in the required documentation and an on-site audit by the auditor. Additionally, as a final record, EDGE allows a file to be generated as a result of the assessment, thus organizing the application content into a shareable document.
